This autumn, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Health released a new report titled Women’s Health in Canada: Closing the Gender Gap.
The report focuses on endometriosis, gynecological cancers, perinatal mental health, and improving treatments for women’s mental illness, making 16 recommendations to the Federal Government on how to improve women’s access to healthcare and health outcomes.
Importantly, the report’s penultimate recommendation is “That the Government of Canada increase targeted funding for women’s health research, including through the National Women’s Health Research Initiative. Such research should reflect the diversity of women in Canada, particularly underrepresented and underserved populations.”
The report was informed by presentations to the House of Commons by women’s health experts and advocates from across the country. Five of these presentations were by WHRI members. We extend our gratitude to Drs. Deborah Money, Nichole Fairbrother, Liisa Galea, Catriona Hippman, Gillian Hanley, Jessica McAlpine, and Catherine Allaire, as well as Kate Wahl, for their work and dedication in speaking to the House of Commons and continuing to advocate for the importance of women’s health research and care.
Though there is still much work to be done, this report is a step in the right direction. We look forward to continuing this work in the new year!
