Reflecting on the past to build a collaborative future

June is National Indigenous History Month, a time to honour the diverse cultures, histories, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples across Canada. It is also a time to reflect on the lasting impacts of colonialism and to support Truth and Reconciliation through education and meaningful engagement.

The 2025 theme, “Reflecting on the past to build a collaborative future,” reminds us to acknowledge the strength of Indigenous Peoples and to work together toward a future grounded in respect, equity, and partnership.

National Indigenous Peoples Day, observed on June 21, is celebrated on the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. This day holds deep spiritual and cultural significance for many Indigenous communities, marking renewal, connection, and celebration. Find National Indigenous Peoples Day events here.

At WHRI, we recognize that advancing reconciliation includes action and accountability. As part of our commitment, one of the strategic goals in our 2025–2028 WHRI Strategic Plan is to “Advance Indigenous women’s health as a research priority across the province.” We are dedicated to working in partnership with Indigenous health leaders and communities to support health research that is culturally safe and grounded in community.
