Mohammadi, Zahra

Biography:
From an early age, I was drawn to the world of biology. As a high school student, I actively participated in research projects and biology competitions, earning top grades and national recognition for both scientific and literary contributions. This passion led me to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology–Genetics, where I ranked second in my program with a GPA of 3.94/4.00.
I later pursued a Master’s degree in Molecular Genetics at Bahonar University of Kerman, one of the top universities in Iran. I graduated with a perfect GPA of 4.00/4.00 and ranked first in my class. My thesis focused on identifying a novel microRNA, involved in the epithelial-mesenchymal transition and breast cancer. This work led to a publication in the Journal of Cellular Biochemistry. I gained advanced molecular biology skills and received multiple research awards.
Driven by a desire to connect laboratory discoveries with patient care, I decided to pursue a PhD. I was accepted into the PhD program at the University of British Columbia in the Women+ and Children’s Health Sciences program. I now study endometrial cancer under the supervision of Drs. Huntsman and McAlpine. I aim to contribute to improved diagnosis and treatment, and ultimately become an independent cancer researcher. My project uses multi-omics approaches to better understand an aggressive subtype of endometrial cancer called mesonephric-like adenocarcinoma. These tumors may appear well-behaved under the microscope, but they behave aggressively in patients.
I believe that joining this outstanding research group will be instrumental in shaping my future and helping me achieve my goal of becoming an effective cancer researcher, one who never forgets that behind every data point are real patients and their families.
