Sharon Koehn
Biography:
Dr. Sharon Koehn is currently a Limited Term Professor in the Department of Gerontology at SFU. Trained as a medical anthropologist, she conducts interdisciplinary community-based research with immigrant older adults on dementia, health care access, chronic disease self-management support, quality of life, and mental health promotion. Dr. Koehn’s current research focuses on the lived experiences of immigrant older adults as captured by photovoice and life story methods and exhibited in community centres across the Lower Mainland. She is also funded by the Alzheimer Society of Canada to conduct research on the experiences of dementia by immigrant older adults and to understand how immigrant serving agencies can partner with ASBC to increase access to dementia information and supports. She currently teaches courses on culture migration and aging, health care issues for minority older adults, death and dying, and health and illness in later life.
