Biography:

Dr. John-Jose Nunez is a psychiatrist and researcher at BC Cancer and UBC Mood Disorders. His clinical work includes helping patients with complex and treatment-resistant mood disorders, and to help address the mental health needs of patients with cancer. His research interests are in the intersection of computer science, mood disorders, and cancer care, particularly in the application of artificial intelligence to these fields. Some of his current projects includes predicting the psychiatrics needs of cancer patients using AI, and understanding how AI may perform differently based on sex and gender, and using AI to predict the sexual function of patients treated with antidepressants. His work has been published in high-impact journals such as JAMA Network Open, and has garnered national and international media coverage such as with the CBC, Toronto Star, Medscape, and Forbes.

Research areas of interest:

Applying artificial intelligence and other computational techniques to help those with mental illness, mood disorders, and cancer. This includes research into how the use of these tools can be impacted by sex and gender, and how these tools can be used to improve sexual health.
