Biography:

 

Dr. Juliana Barrera is an obstetric anesthesiologist, clinical instructor, and researcher at BC Women’s Hospital and the University of British Columbia. With a strong academic background, she earned her Honors Bachelor of Health Sciences, and Master’s degree in Human Kinetics with a specialization in Physiology and Doctor of Medicine from the University of Ottawa, and completed her residency in Anesthesia and Perioperative Care at Western University. Her training is further enriched by advanced education in clinical research methodology at Harvard University, and a clinical fellowship in obstetric anesthesia at UBC.

Dr. Barrera has made significant contributions to the field through her research portfolio. Her work spans diverse areas including applications of ultrasound in obstetric anesthesia, maternal mental health and pharmacological studies. She has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and secured competitive research grants that highlight her commitment to advancing clinical practice and improving patient outcomes. Currently, she is actively involved in leading research projects in the fields of Point-of-care ultrasound, postpartum birth trauma and integration of AI in obstetric anesthesia.

An accomplished educator, Dr. Barrera regularly designs and delivers targeted teaching sessions for medical students, anesthesia residents, and allied health professionals at both national and international forums. Her leadership extends to mentoring emerging scholars and serving in key roles on professional committees. Through her clinical excellence, scholarly achievements, and dedication to education, she remains a driving force in the evolution of obstetric anesthesia.
