Announcing the results of the 2020 Graduate and Fellowship Research Awards
We are very pleased to congratulate Dr. Katerina Rnic (right) and Dr. Ismalia De Sousa (left), recipients of the 2020 Graduate and Fellowship Research Award in Women’s Health. This competition was funded thanks to the dedicated support of the BC Women’s Health Foundation. In 2020, the WHRI offered the Graduate and Fellowship Research Award in Women’s Health to create a funding opportunity specific to our outstanding trainee community. This award is intended to provide salary support to WHRI-affiliated graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who are engaged in women’s and/or newborn health research under the mentorship of a WHRI member.

16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence
"According to current evidence, in Canada 51% of women older than 16 report having experienced physical or sexual abuse. Based on reports, it is estimated that more than 1 in 10 female spousal victims in Canada are pregnant at the time of violence."
We are halfway through the annual 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign, an international effort which calls for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls. Data shows that lockdown measures to slow the spread of COVID-19 have coincided with a spike in domestic violence globally, which underscores the critical role healthcare providers can play in supporting women in their practice.
Last month, Drs. Jila Mirlashari, Ann Pederson, Lori Brotto, and Janet Lyons presented at BC Women's Hospital Research Rounds their research on the experiences of women and healthcare providers in assessing history of gender-based violence during perinatal care.
Click the button below to read more about this study, led by Dr. Mirlashari, and to view the rounds presentation.

#WeSeeYou
| |
The BC Women’s Health Foundation has launched a new report series called Unmasking Gender Inequity to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on women’s health in BC. The first of the four reports, created in collaboration with economist Dr. Marina Adshade and Pacific Blue Cross, quantifies the disproportionate socioeconomic impact of the COVID-19 crisis on women along with how this has impacted women’s health in our province.
A social media campaign called #WeSeeYou launched alongside the reports to encourage women, male allies and organizations to ‘see’ women in BC by recognizing the important role that each woman is playing during the pandemic. Women and men are encouraged to use their platform to call for gender inequity in health and pandemic recovery plans to be 'unmasked’. You too can join in by following @bcwomens on social media to learn more about how to get involved with the #WeSeeYou campaign.
