Updates on the BC Perinatal Data Registry
In September 2018, the Women’s Health Research Institute (WHRI) launched a pilot project in partnership with Perinatal Services BC that aimed to provide streamlined and efficient access to data within the BC Perinatal Data Registry (BCPDR). The BCPDR contains maternal, fetal, and neonatal health information for an estimated 99% of all deliveries and births that occur in British Columbia. From the year 2000, the BCPDR has captured approximately 45,000 births per year, including data on maternal postpartum readmissions up to 42 days post-delivery and baby transfers and readmissions up to 28 days after birth. Access to unlinked person specific (record level) de-identified data from the BCPDR can be provided for addressing a specific set of research questions. Aggregate data without personal information that are expressed in summary form (i.e. total births, average age of mother at delivery, total cesarean sections, etc.) are also available to assist with research planning.
Keep reading to learn more about the BCPDR and its activities in its first two years!

REACH BC: Join the opportunity! |
|
|
REACH BC is a new online platform that connects the public and patients with research opportunities related to their health conditions and/or interests, to ultimately advance health care and improve health outcomes in British Columbia.
In order to better facilitate online recruitment of research participants during curtailment the WHRI and BCCHR offered a REACH BC webinar to staff and members on November 18th, facilitated by Project Manager, Stefanie Cheah. Following the training, over fifteen researchers joined REACH BC.
Stefanie took attendees through an overview of the platform, how to sign up for an account, and how to submit your research project to the public directory and find volunteers that matched the eligibility criteria. To date there are over 1600 people registered as REACH BC Volunteers, searching for health research opportunities in BC.
You can watch the full recording of the webinar on our YouTube channel.

@WomensResearch Wellness Exchange
On December 10th the WHRI hosted its first virtual public event, the @WomensResearch Wellness Exchange. We want to extend our sincere thanks to you, our community, for promoting it, our members and patient partners for presenting, and our Emcee Shirley Weir for facilitating. We were thrilled to have 72 attendees at the event, representing a broad geographical area. Including the Lower Mainland: Vancouver, North Vancouver, Burnaby, Delta, and Abbotsford. We especially saw the virtual accessibility through pan-Canadian and international attendees joining us from Kamloops, British Columbia; Halifax, Nova Scotia; Blaine Washington, Melbourne, Australia and Mexico. We are committed to continuing to support the translation, dissemination and exchange of research with our public community. Save-the-Date for our next public event on March 4, 2021! If you missed the event, feel free to watch the full recording on our Facebook page.

Calling all 25-39 year-olds to Participate in the COVID-19 RESPPONSE Study!
British Columbia urgently needs population-level data on COVID-19. Although pandemics are known to affect men and women differently, population level data is often analyzed without proper attention to sex and gender. The COVID-19 RESPPONSE study will provide the first Canadian estimates of COVID-19 infection with a focus on sex and gender, to aid in informing public health decisions.
The COVID-19 RESPPONSE study is looking for participants willing to complete an online consent form and survey. At the end of the survey, you will be invited to enter your mailing address to receive an at-home test for COVID-19 antibodies. This includes a dried blood spot sample (via finger prick) to test for past COVID-19 infection. You will receive your results. All participants will be entered into a draw to win one of 200 $100 gift cards.
