Introduction to Databases
Join UBC Advanced Research Computing (ARC) for a 2.5 hour lecture-format workshop on an Introduction to Databases! They invite anyone to attend who is interested in learning more about how to use databases and in-database analytics in their research.
In this workshop, ARC will provide an overview of databases and then use a case study to demonstrate how to build a relational database from scratch, interact with the database, and perform in-database analytics. The workshop will cover:
- What is a database and why it is important?
- Where to host your database?
- How to build a relational database?
- How to manage users?
- How to secure your database?
- How to perform in-database analytics?
Attendees should have some basic understanding of Linux command line. Lightweight python scripts will be used for in-database analytics, but coding will not be covered in the workshop. Python programming skills are not a requirement for this course. Experience with database integrated development environment (IDE) and code editor is helpful but not a must.

Gates Foundation looking for a Senior Program Officer, Reproductive Health Technologies
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is searching for a Senior Program Officer, Reproductive Health Technologies. This team currently focuses on the critical need for innovation in sexual and reproductive health with five core priorities: - Vaginal microbiome interventions for treatment of bacterial vaginosis and risks associated with chronic vaginal dysbiosis, including HIV/STI acquisition and adverse birth outcomes
- Prevention of cervical cancer through development of a therapeutic vaccine to clear HPV infection and/or regress HPV-induced dysplasia
- Epitope discovery aimed at development of a preventative syphilis vaccine
- Discovery and pre-clinical design of novel non-hormonal contraceptives
- Understanding and improving menstrual health and hygiene including innovations in material science to develop menstrual health products that better meet the needs of people in low and middle income countries
The ideal candidate should have
The ideal candidate should have an M.D., PhD, or other relevant terminal degree with deep knowledge, expertise and professional experience in microbial pathogenesis and human immunology with a focus on reproductive biology or physiology.
