Happy New Year to our Women’s Health Research Community! In this month’s e-blast, you’ll see some new mentions! We are very excited to welcome Sabina Dobrer as the WHRI’s senior biostatistician. Sabina comes with many years of statistical and analytical consulting, and will be offering free training opportunities to our trainees in the coming months for building a foundation in statistical skills. We also welcome Dr. Beth Payne into a new joint role between WHRI and BC Children’s Research Institute as our Digital Health Research Manager. Among the various initiatives Beth will take on, one is integrating the digital health research supports on the Oak Street campus and aligning them with a Digital Health research strategy. We also offer our heartfelt congratulations to former Executive Board member, Dr. Angela Kaida, who has taken on the role of Scientific Director, Institute of Gender and Health at CIHR. For those of you who have worked with Dr. Kaida, you will know that in addition to being a cutting-edge researcher, she is both a heavily sought after mentor to trainees and a marvelous leader. We are excited to watch her thrive in this role and wish her our very best.

If you are or work with a women’s health trainee who has not yet become a member of the WHRI, please share our website with them and encourage them to join. We have many trainee events planned for 2023!

Sincerely,

Lori Brotto, PhD, R Psych

She brings with her over 20 years of experience in the area of social policy, health and clinical research, and is an expert in both experimental and non-experimental design and analysis. Congratulations, Dr. Beth Payne!

We are excited to announce the appointment of Dr. Beth Payne to a new joint role as the Digital Health Research Program Manager for WHRI and BCCHR.

Beth has served as the Digital Health Research Program Manager at BCCHR since June 2021 and will be continuing in this role, now jointly reporting to both research institutes under the direction of Dr. Lori Brotto, WHRI Executive Director and Dr. Tibor van Rooij, Director of Research Informatics at BCCHR. Beth collaborated with WHRI for the past year on joint digital health initiatives (e.g. the monthly digital health research seminar series and the Michael Smith funded project to develop a shared research agenda in perinatal digital innovation). She is excited to expand these collaborations in her shared role.

Beth brings over 15 years’ research management experience in the fields of global public health and health informatics focused on maternal and child health. In previous roles, she has managed several large, complex and multi-disciplinary research projects in regional, national and international settings. She brings a wealth of experience and expertise in health systems research and implementation science to support the research communities at both BCCHR and WHRI.

In her role as Digital Health Research Program Manager, Beth will continue to build the digital health research program at both institutes by creating opportunities to learn and share knowledge related to digital innovations in women’s and children’s health. She will actively engage with decision makers in government and the health authorities to enable digital health research success and alignment of priorities. This to better support individual investigators at both research institutes in developing digital health research project plans and partnerships.

Update to C&W Research Pharmacy & Research Medical Imaging Billing Procedures

Message sent on behalf of: Roxane Carr, Coordinator, Clinical Services, C&W Pharmacy; Heather Bray, Department Head and Medical Director, Department of Radiology; & Lori Brotto, Executive Director, Women’s Health Research Institute

The C&W Research Pharmacy and Medical Imaging (MI) departments are streamlining research services in partnership with BCCHR Finance to support cost-recovery and invoicing of research activities. We hope this partnership will help improve efficiencies in both departments to better support the needs of the clinical research community.

Beginning January 2023 new and existing projects that are using C&W Pharmacy or MI for research services will receive a unique survey via REDCap from BCCHR Finance. Principal Investigator’s are asked to provide billing cost centre information and consent to pre-authorized payments. All future invoices will be automatically processed with the billing information provided. Study teams will be sent a notification of payment for their records, but no further action will be required. This process will help automate invoice payments and ensure timely payment for Research Pharmacy & MI services. If contact information or billing instructions need to be updated, study teams can notify BCCHR Finance at: Winston.poon@bcchr.ca

We thank you in advance for your attention to this. We are committed to improving services for the clinical research community, so please do not hesitate to reach out should you have any additional questions or feedback.
