How to Tackle Tweeting? Ask the Expert!

Communications Assistant, Rebecca Tingling, had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Dorothy Shaw, Vice President Medical Affairs at BC Women’s Hospital. Many of our WHRI Members have expressed interest in creating a Twitter account after reading our feature article on Twitter expert, Dr. Kendall Ho, but are hesitant given Twitter’s public nature and their professional affiliations. Dr. Shaw provides useful advice on how to overcome these hesitations, along with tips to ensure tweets reach the appropriate audience and maximize engagement.

New Funding Opportunity to Protect and Nurture Early Child Development!

Saving Brains has just announced a $250,000 funding opportunity that aims to address the risk factors children living in adversity face by providing innovative solutions to promote health and nutrition, and protect against maltreatment.

This funding opportunity is open to applicants in low and middle income countries, as well as Canada, with the ultimate goal of tackling existing inequities.

Reminder: Aging Well for Women, Public Forum Approaching!

On Thursday September 28th from 7:00pm - 9:00pm the Women's Health Research Institute will be hosting a public forum titled "Aging Well for Women: How to Optimize Your Health Through Perimenopause, Menopause & Beyond" at the Italian Cultural Centre. Dr. Nicole Todd, Joanie Sims-Gould, Liisa Galea, and WHRI Executive Director, Dr. Lori Brotto, will speak at the forum to discus topics such as hormones, exercise, memory and intimacy. On Wednesday, October 25th 2017, Simon Fraser University and the Women’s Health Research Institute will be hosting the Women’s Health Research Symposium taking place at the Diamond Alumni Centre. The symposium will examine diversity across disciplines, decades and distances to continue the discussion surrounding women’s health and health research.

WHRI Staff Spotlight: Laurie Smith, Research Program Manager for HPV Diseases Research

Laurie has a Bachelor of Nursing from the University of Calgary and a Master of Public Health from UBC. She began her career in health care over 20 years ago, and nursed primarily in Bone Marrow Transplant and the ICU. Nursing eventually led to a career in research as an ICU research coordinator. She left acute care medicine to pursue a passion for Public Health and took the role of Project Manager for the HPV FOCAL Trial, a landmark RCT evaluating primary HPV testing for cervical cancer screening in BC.

Laurie is now the Research Program Manager for HPV Diseases Research with Dr. Gina Ogilvie, where she oversees all program activities relating to projects geared towards eradication of HPV related cancers and diseases. Laurie’s extensive clinical, project and program management experience and her work on HPV provide her with a unique skill set within WHRI. Susan Wannamaker Announced as President, BC Children’s Hospital and Women’s Health and Vice President, PHSA.

We are pleased to congratulate Susan Wannamaker as the newly appointed President of the BC Children’s Hospital and Women’s Health and Vice President of PHSA.

Susan has 35 years of past experience in the health care field and is dedication and passionate about improving patients experience. One of Susan’s first priorities will be to review structure and operations, with a particular focus on ensuring all our teams at C&W are collaborating and coordinating as effectively as possible.We are proud to have Susan at the forefront of the BC Children's Hospital and Women's Health.
