WHRI's International Women's Day Event

Join us on the evening of March 8th for a special public presentation in honour of International Women's Day (IWD). The theme for IWD 2017 is #BeBoldForChange - a call to action for a more gender-inclusive world.

Our Vancouver-based event will include brief presentations by local experts in areas of women's health who will be discussing the latest recommendations for breast health, gynecologic cancer screening, mental wellness and sexual health.

WHRI Early Career Investigator and Knowledge Translation Awards

We have recently launched two new awards to honour excellence in women's and newborn health research in our province: the WHRI Early Career Investigator Award and the WHRI Knowledge Translation Award.

Award recipients will be announced at our 2nd Annual Women's Health Research Symposium on Wednesday April 26th, 2017 at the AMS Nest building at UBC. 

MSFHR's Innovation to Commercialization (I2C) Award

MSFHR has recently opened applications for the first Innovation to Commercialization (I2C) awards to support BC health researchers advancing a discovery or invention towards commercialization. 

The I2C Program has been specifically designed to strengthen the health innovation to commercialization pathway in BC, helping researchers bridge the gap between discovery and commercial application.

SPOTLIGHT: Engaging Patients in Research

The WHRI is inspired by Canada’s Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR). This means that, whenever possible, patients are involved in all aspects of the research process to ensure questions and results are relevant. 

This month, we are highlighting the work of Dr. Paul Yong and his collaborators at BC Women's Centre for Pelvic Pain and Endometriosis as an example of how patients can be engaged in the research process.

Deep dyspareunia (pelvic pain with intercourse or penetration during sexual activity) affects approximately 10% of women. Researchers have tried to study what causes deep dyspareunia and how to treat it, however; research has been hampered by the fact that no one has ever asked women’s input on identifying the best question to measure deep dyspareunia. Dr. Paul Yong is currently leading a study to validate a single-item question about the severity of deep dyspareunia, with two goals.  First, to engage women with deep dyspareunia and to receive their feedback about the question in order to ensure that deep dyspareunia, rather than other types of sexual pain or pelvic pain, is being measured.  Second, to ensure that the question has valid statistical properties such as reproducibility.  This work will allow researchers to better study deep dyspareunia and allow clinicians to better assess deep dyspareunia when seeing patients.
