Dr. Gina Ogilvie wins the YWCA 2018 Women of Distinction Award

On June 7th Dr. Gina Ogilvie was awarded the YWCA 2018 Women of Distinction Award in the category of Research and the Sciences. 

A huge congratulations to Dr. Ogilvie for this achievement, and for continuing to inspire us with her hard work toward the eradication of cervical cancer!

BC Women's Hospital selected as Canadian site for American research trial

The Women’s Health Research Institute (WHRI) is excited to announce that BC Women’s Hospital + Health Centre (BCWH) has been selected as one of four Canadian sites to participate in a large-scale NIH-funded study entitled “Pharmacokinetics and Safety of Commonly Used Drugs in Lactating Women and Breastfed Infants”.

Home to Vote: A journey to repeal the Eighth

Ciana Maher, Research Coordinator at WHRI, journeyed home last month to vote in Ireland’s historic referendum on abortion.

The referendum was held to repeal the Eighth Amendment which was written into the Irish constitution in 1983, and gave “the unborn” the equal right to life as the mother carrying it.

Toward gender equity in health research


Research has shown that women face systematic disadvantages in research. In British Columbia, the MIchael Smith Foundation for Health Research (MSFHR) is taking steps to change that as a funding agency.

In honour of Stroke Awareness Month we'd like to highlight the inequities faced by women when it comes to heart health. This year the Heart and Stroke Foundation released Lives disrupted: The impact of stroke on women, a report which shares women's unique risks for stroke throughout the lifespan, as well as suggestions for ways that researchers can help address this gap.

CIHR has appointed a new President!

Dr. Michael J. Strong has been appointed as the new President of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. He will begin his appointment on October 1st, 2018!

Shopper's Run for Women

Last month BC Women's Hospital + Health Centre Foundation (BCWHF) partnered with Shopper's Drug Mart to raise money for research on perinatal mental health conducted at WHRI.
